Questions

Questions people ask us

Do you take my insurance?

Fathom is out of network with insurance plans, so you pay yourself and we do not bill your plan. We do not take Medicare or Medicaid. If your plan reimburses out-of-network care, the monthly receipt we give you is what you send it.

What is a superbill, and how do I use it?

A superbill is an itemized receipt, with the dates and kinds of service, that your plan may reimburse in part if it covers out-of-network care. It carries a diagnosis code your plan can see, and your plan decides whether it pays anything. Ask it about out-of-network mental health benefits before you start.

What is a Good Faith Estimate?

If you pay without insurance, you have the right to receive a written estimate of what your care will cost before you start. We send you one before your preparation call. If the final bill is $400 or more above the estimate, you can dispute it. The estimate is not a contract. You can read about your rights at cms.gov/nosurprises.

How do fees work, and when will I know mine?

Your fee depends on what you book: a preparation call, a three-hour block, a package of blocks, or a follow-up session. We give it to you in writing before your preparation call, so you know it before you commit to anything. You pay by card at the end of each call, block or follow-up, and a package when its first block is booked. How fees work explains insurance, receipts and the written estimate.

Can I use an HSA or FSA card?

You can pay with one. Whether your plan counts therapy as an eligible expense is a question for your plan's administrator, so check before you book.

What happens in the preparation call?

It is a 50-minute call by phone or video, before any trauma work. We talk about what a block asks of you, what supports you have, and the risks, and you decide how much of your history to share. At the end we decide together whether a block fits, and when.

How long is a block, and how many will I need?

A block is three hours, with breaks. Some people book blocks weeks apart and some on back-to-back days. Your clinician sets the pace with you after the preparation call, and there is no set number of blocks. Weekly or monthly 50-minute sessions are an option too.

Are you licensed where I live?

Lan and Emmett are licensed in Alaska. We see you in person in Anchorage, or by video when you are in Alaska at the time of the session. If you live in another state and will not be in Alaska, we can't see you, and we are glad to help you find someone.

What should I do in a crisis?

Fathom is not a crisis service, and this site is not monitored around the clock. If you are in crisis, call or text 988. In an emergency, call 911. The crisis and resources page has more.

What is confidential, and what are the limits?

What you tell us stays between you and us, with limits the law sets: a risk of serious harm to you or someone else, abuse of a child or of a vulnerable adult, and a court order. We explain them in writing before you tell us anything, and we keep your records private and share them only as the law allows.

Can you see my teen?

Fathom works with adults 18 and older. If you are looking for someone for a teen, we can point you to a clinician who does, and that clinician explains how consent works in Alaska on the first call.

What is your cancellation policy?

Change a block with 7 days' notice and there is no charge. With less notice, the block's fee is due, because the time was held for you. A preparation call or a follow-up can be changed with 24 hours' notice.
